Merida will submit candidacy as ‘Creative City’ to UNESCO

The municipality of Mérida will submit the candidacy of the municipality to the Network of Creative Cities of UNESCO in the category of gastronomy this Friday, informed Eduardo Seijo Solís, director of Economic Development and Tourism.

He explained that the master project of this candidacy attacks 3 aspects, economic, environmental and social; in addition to being attached to the 2030 agenda of UNESCO and the protocols of the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) and the UNWTO (World Tourism Organization) so that the best agroecological practices in the production of food are implemented.

“I doubt there are many cities that can expose what we expose,” said Seijo Solis, who clarified that it is not only the attributes of the city of Merida in gastronomic matters, but the social vision they included.

“We are proposing the creation of the first International Center for Creative Gastronomy in the world, as a large municipal center of entrepreneurs, but for cities.”

Actions such as intervention with infrastructure and the application of science are also taken into account, for which they are working with the germplasm laboratory of the Science Park. All the objectives have a deadline of four years for compliance.

Likewise, it is intended that with this distinction, tourism will be given a boost through the prestige of the city, since there are only 26 Creative Cities of gastronomy in the world.
